I know plenty of people that would pay close to $10,000 if their digital photo frame would give them back tickles, I think I will put my engineers to work on this one.

Whether you would like to call them LCD picture frames or digital photo viewers – they are a great way to view your digital photos. Digital pictures can bring a daily smile to your face if displayed in a pleasing manner.

You were smart enough to take the time to snap those shots, don’t let them be locked away on your computer or trapped in your camera. When looking to purchase your next digital frame a key component to keep in the front of your noggin is screen resolution.

I can hear you now, “I know nothing of the screen resolution specifications of which you speak! These confounded digital picture photo frames are too complicated and I shall not spend the time.”

Nay, they are not complex and do not be alarmed as we can stroll down this merry path together. You can skip if you like – I will not – okay maybe I will.

We expend loads of effort to capture these moments, take the time to display and enjoy them!!

When you are looking at the specs for digital photo frames sometimes you have to dig a little to find the resolution. It should be something like 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. These numbers represent the number of pixels.

Think of pixels like candy. The more you have the happier you will be. Well, wait a tic, if you have a lot of candy you may not look so good in the next photo that appears in your picture frame. Regardless, you want as many pixels as you can get your hands on. Also, the size of the digital picture frame will affect how many pixels are necessary.

Another number that relates to screen resolution is aspect ratio. An aspect ratio represents the ratio of the image or screen width to the height - separated by a colon.For example, 4:3.

Screen resolution and aspect ratio are different ways of expressing the same thing.

The aspect ratio is the simplified fraction of the screen resolution.

For example : a screen resolution of 800 x 600 can be simplified to  4:3 aspect ratio – just reducing down the fraction.

Same as a screen resolution of  1024 x  768 gives you 4:3 -  you get the idea.

Also, another common aspect ratio you might see is 16:9. An example screen resolution you might see for this would be something like 800 x 480. The math isn’t always dead on but it’s always closer to the 16:9 or the 4:3.

It either looks more like a rectangle (16:9) or more like a square (4:3). You probably take pictures in the squarish 4:3,  so in order for the digital picture frame to not distort your pictures the 4:3 aspect ratio is the one to stick with.

You DO NOT want your pics to end up looking like this on your digital photo frame.------------(Yes, this is me.)

These days the minimum you probably want even on an 8″ is 800 x 600 pixels.

Why do I want this to be the minimum?

Because the price has dropped on DPFs so much recently that you do not need to settle for anything less.

On the other hand if you are looking at a 15″ DPF or something like that, you definitely want at least the 1024 x 768.

With the launch of iPad* recently there has been a lot of buzz about uploading digital pictures to your digital picture frame wirelessly.

There are a seemingly infinite number of choices when it comes to choosing a digital photo frame and more and more of them seem to claim this ability to wirelessly upload your photos.

(Note: Using a device like the iPad to display photos means this device has to do double duty. The beauty of having a dedicated digital photo frame is that it is DEDICATED. If you don’t have a digital camera picture frame in your home you probably ARE NOT looking at all the wonderful photographs you are taking.)

From the experience with the units we have tested thus far, the wireless capability to send photos to the digital picture frame is not very reliable.  Please don’t think for a second that the functionality of sending photos to your digital photo frame from a web account is going to be as seamless as sending an email. A lot of the frames we have tested at BestDPF.com do not do this very well. That’s not to say that the technology will not soon show up – in our opinion it’s just not here yet.

The advantage of the units from BestDPF.com is that they are beautifully shadowboxed, BUT you can still access the uploading features on the back.

* Obviously, we have not tested the iPad functionality as they are not really readily available. Would love any comments if someone gets their hands on one before us. We will obviously check it out ASAP.

I do have a question for you though.

What if I was the only manufacturer of digital picture frames there was? And what if I told all my engineers and factory people that we were only going to make one size and ram it down your throat. “Here is a 20 foot long digital photo frame and this is all we have to offer.”

I know you all would love to see what my talented engineers and fabricators could come up with, but I told them to produce something completely over the top and wasteful – so much so that the waste almost makes you sick to your stomach.

This is what the Olympics have become. Yea, they’re great, but does it really have to be such a spectacle, do we have to spend gajillions of dollars on them every 2 years. It’s a waste. I do think they need to be special with an heir of poignancy, but it’s too much. Almost everyone I know is mindlessly enjoying them right now, without really taking the time to think how the money could be put to better use. I haven’t watched more than 4 seconds and will not in protest.

When does it stop?

Only when we vote with our pocketbooks does it stop.

If I forced all my talent to make that stupid 20 foot digital photo frame, you would vote real fast by not paying a lick of attention to me, because you realized right away that a 20 foot digital photo frame is excessive and a waste of time, it’s just not necessary. But, when we see blatant waste in a world where so many suffer needlessly – because it comes from the almighty NBC – we accept it and say, “Ahh, this is just right”.

It’s doesn’t seem quite right. It’s out of balance.
